A habit is defined as a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur unconsciously. Habitual behavior can often go unnoticed in the person who is exhibiting it, because a person does not engage in self-analysis when undertaking routine tasks.

With that being said, keeping your habits effective when operating a small business is very significant to the well-being of the company and motivating for the employees to succeed. Here are some habits that highly effective small business owners demonstrate on a daily basis:

  1. Business leaders know their purpose. They set foot in the leadership role knowing what they want out of their business and from employees, with full confidence in communicating that vision. They’ll use this to drive the company and themselves in a focused approach.
  2. Proactive people recognize they’re “response-able”. They choose their behavior regardless of any situation going on in the workplace. Instead of worrying over something they have little to no control of, proactive leaders will focus their time and energy on the things they can control with their positive influence. With that attitude, proactive leaders gain awareness on what they can improve with “I can” and “I will” language, which carries over to all employees.
  3. An effective leader focuses on what the employees need to feel best about themselves. When employees feel their best, they will perform their best. Often, that just takes their leader to give them that sense. Motivation from employees will grow from this habit and link to higher confidence in the workplace.
  4. Everyday interaction and communication from business leaders to their employees shows respect and concern for their well being while working. This will inspire passion for work, for the company and for what needs to get done.
  5. Successful leaders are always looking for ways to personally improve. They recognize they’re never perfect, and there are always ways to be better at their own jobs.

Smart business owners develop the habit of believing in themselves. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone that you’re supposed to be leading? Don’t be distracted by those who say you have to “be born a great leader”. It often takes time, experience and good habit forming skills.
